Working with schools

Circus provides a unique experience to engage students and enrich their learning. The circus arts can be effectively integrated into the National Curriculum in a number of ways, linking with PE, dance and drama as well as other subjects such as citizenship and science, for example through exploring the physics of circus. We have developed a number of ways for school groups to access the circus arts, both physically and non-physically.

SCHOOL TRIPS £3 per head (minimum 10 people)

Our trips last for 1 hour and include a full tour of our building as well as a library-based activity session.  Students are able to enter our training spaces (2 huge chambers as well as smaller specialist studios) which are usually closed to the public.

We have 3 themed school trips:

The Business of being a Circus Artist: Focuses on what it is really like to work in the circus.  This includes the opportunity to hot seat a professional artist. This trip links well to the IPC Circus (Movement and Entertainment) topic for Key Stage 1.

Recycled Building: Tells the story of our amazing building and how it has been reclaimed from a derelict powerstation to Circus school.

Working in the Arts: This allows students to learn more about the range of employment opportunities and in particular all the behind the scenes areas that students may not otherwise be aware of (e.g. technical support, IT, marketing etc).

INSET DAYS

Our inset days are a great way to bring the team together to learn new skills.  We adapt each workshop to the needs of a specific group, but previous themes have included:

Developing Creative Approaches

Feeling Safe when Taking Risks

Feedback from previous participants:

“I can take skills back into schools and adapt to dance skills and gymnastics”

Hackney secondary school teacher

“I gained an insight into the experience and processes involved in learning circus skills.”
